Autumn Carp Fishing Tips: How to Catch More as the Water Cools

Autumn is arguably the best time of year to catch a big carp. The fish know winter is coming, so they feed hard to put on weight — and if you get your location and bait right, you can enjoy some of the most productive sessions of the year.

Follow the fish

As the water cools, carp move. Early autumn they often hold in the warmer, shallower bays in the afternoon sun; later on they drop back to deeper, more stable water. Spend ten minutes watching the water before you cast — bubbles, rolling fish and coloured water all give the swim away.

Feed for the season

Carp are still feeding well in autumn, so you can bait a little more positively than in winter. Oily, fishmeal boilies and bait come into their own as the temperature drops, and a scattering of pellets or particles keeps fish grubbing around your hookbait. A bright, washed-out pop-up over a bed of bait is a classic autumn tactic.

Stay comfortable and you will stay longer

Keep your rigs simple

You do not need anything complicated. A balanced bottom bait or a slow-sinking pop-up on a short, supple hooklink will catch you plenty of autumn carp. Keep hooks sharp, check your end tackle regularly, and strike early takes positively.
